How to Wire a 200V AC

The standard North American power supply is 220 volts at 60Hz. This is delivered to the building via four wires to make a safe electrical system. The black and red hot wires provide the path for the electricity to get from the source to the device. The white neutral wire is the path back to the source and the green or bare ground wire is the back up safety system. Wiring a 200 volt alternating current device is simple once you understand where to make the connections.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the power for the circuit you are working on at the building distribution panel. Confirm the power is off by touching a non-contact voltage detector to the wire's insulation.

    • 2

Strip 3/8 inch of insulation off the black, red, white and green wires in the power wire from the distribution panel.

    • 3

Loosen the electrical terminals in the 200 volt device with a screwdriver. Push the green or bare wire into the ground terminal and tighten it down.

    • 4

Insert the black and red wire into the two hot terminals and tighten them down.

    • 5

Insert the white wire into the neutral terminal and tighten it down. Your device may not require a neutral connection, depending on its needs. Consult the owner's manual for more information.
