How to Wire a Microwave in Campers

Just because you're in the middle of nowhere doesn't mean you can't enjoy a microwave meal. RV campers and motor homes contain deep-cycle batteries that give off a 12-volt power supply for things like lights and heated mattresses. But these batteries are capable of being converted to 110-volt electrical outlets, for use with devices such as small televisions, refrigerators and even microwaves. By connecting a power inverter to the 12-volt power supply, you can use almost any everyday appliance.

Instructions

    • 1

Identify the operating wattage requirements of your microwave. The wattage requirements are printed on the inside of the microwave, usually where the door closes.

    • 2

Purchase a 12-volt power inverter that meets or exceeds the wattage requirement of your microwave. For example, a power inverter that's rated for 1,100 watts will not power a microwave that requires 1,500 watts. Purchasing an inverter that's rated for 2,000 watts will power your microwave and other small appliances at the same time.

    • 3

Locate a 12-volt port in the camper. The ports are round and look identical to cigarette lighter ports in the front of vehicles.

    • 4

Plug the 12-volt connecter on the inverter into the port in the camper.

    • 5

Plug the AC plug on the microwave into one of the AC ports on the inverter and use the microwave as normal.
