How to Install a Three-Phase Electrical Panel

Most industrial electrical systems and many residential electrical systems use three-phase systems in order to produce higher voltage than single-phase systems. The biggest difference. besides the higher voltage capacity, is that the three-phase systems use three power lines in order to produce electricity as opposed to a single power line, and no neutral wire. The grounding on a three-phase electrical system is the same as other panels. Installing a three-phase electrical panel can be done with the appropriate tools and wires.

Turn the main power off by shutting the switch to the off position located at the breaker box. Remove the breaker panel cover entirely, using a screwdriver to loosen and remove the screws. Test that that power is turned off with a voltmeter.

Use a flat-head screwdriver to install a three-phase breaker into one of the breaker slots. Take three wires and, using a wire stripper, strip the ends. Insert the wires into the three breaker lugs, twisting them in with a screwdriver until they fit tightly.

Strip the end of the ground wire with wire strippers in the same fashion as you stripped the electrical wires. Insert the ground wire into the ground bar lug, twisting it in with a screwdriver until it has a snug fit. Place the panel cover back on the circuit breaker, then test the circuits with a voltmeter before turning the main power switch back on.
