How to Install a 60 Amp 2 Circuit Electrical Panel

It is often advantageous to install a separate, smaller capacity electrical panel in a garage or barn to allow for electrical connectivity without the installation of a second meter. Work areas such as these rarely require the high capacity current that a main structure uses. This allows for a simpler electrical panel installation that may often be performed with care by a homeowner. A 60 amp, two-circuit panel is an excellent mid-level power source for a workshop or garage.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate a satisfactory mounting area within the structure. This is often the closest point to the main home within the smaller structure.

    • 2

Mount the 60 amp sub-panel using properly sized mounting screws or bolts. Pre-drill holes into the structure if necessary.

    • 3

Check to make sure the 60 amp circuit from the main structure, if one has been installed, is disabled and not transmitting any electrical current.

    • 4

Connect the 60 amp circuit wire, if it is already installed, from the main structure or home to the main electrical lugs in the 60 amp panel. These are often located at the upper-most portion of the main electrical service panel. The circuit wires, in most designs, slide under two large bolts that are tightened over them.

    • 5

Close the service panel box. Circuit breakers may now be added to the service panel to allow for the installation of circuits.

    • 6

Turn on the 60 amp breaker at the main service panel to provide electrical power to the 60 amp sub-panel.
