How to Replace the Batteries on Drill Battery Packs

Over time, the battery in your cordless drill wears down. Drills with worn-out batteries operate more slowly than those with good batteries, and eventually they give out altogether. Replacing the battery pack takes a few minutes and gets your equipment ready for the job. Purchase the right drill battery for your needs; not all batteries are created equal. Note that Ni-MH or nickel metal hydride batteries are rechargeable, and Ni-Cd or nickel cadmium batteries are not. Your drill can run with either type.

Consider what's more important to you before buying your battery: price or durability. Drill battery packs come in a fixed range of sizes and amperes (sometimes abbreviated as Ah). The ampere tells you how long the battery will last. According to Inside Woodworking, a 12-volt battery with 2.4 Ah will last longer than one with 1.8 Ah, but it will cost more. If you use the drill frequently, you may prefer a longer-lasting drill battery.

Buy a replacement battery pack from a hardware store or other retailer. If you're not sure what voltage you need, consult your manual before you buy.

    • 3

Turn your drill over, looking for the battery pack cover. This is usually on the bottom of the drill. Look for an arrow indicating where to release the battery pack cover.

    • 4

Push up on the arrow to remove the battery pack cover. Place the cover beside you.

    • 5

Turn the drill over so that the old battery pack slides out. Place it on the table beside you.

    • 6

Take the new battery pack out of its package. Slide it into the battery chamber, lining up the positive and negative charges so the battery will work properly. Your drill should have a diagram, or you can remember the position of the old battery when you removed it.

    • 7

Align the battery pack cover back over the end of your drill and push it back into place. You should hear a click when it's properly aligned.

    • 8

Press your drill's trigger to make sure the battery works. Your drill should operate as normal.
