Wood Water Spot Removal

Water spots develop on wood when condensation forms on the outside of a glass or other container and drops on the wood. The water soaks deep into the wood where it will leave a ring or spot that can be tricky to remove. Address water spots on your wood furniture as soon as possible to make the process easier and faster.
  1. White Toothpaste

    • White toothpaste will help lighten or remove the watermarks on the wood furniture. To use it, apply the toothpaste to a clean cloth and rub the toothpaste into the wood. Rub in circular motions around the water spot until the stain is gone. Rinse the area with a water-dampened cloth and dry it immediately and thoroughly with a clean cloth.

    Corn Oil and Salt

    • Similarly to white toothpaste, corn oil and salt can also remove the water stain. To use them, add enough salt to the corn oil to make a thick paste. This paste will be slightly more abrasive than the toothpaste and will remove the stain faster. Work the paste into the stain until you remove it. Rinse the area and dry it completely.

    Superfine Steel Wool

    • Superfine steel wool is soft enough to only lightly scrape off the top layer of the wood. This will remove very light water spots. To use steel wool, dampen the area with water. The water will lubricate the surface to prevent scratches. Rub the superfine steel wool directly over the spot until you remove it. Rub with the grain until the stain is gone.

    Water Extraction

    • Both of the above methods work to remove the stain, but they don't remove the excess water that is in the wood. You can do this by placing a cloth over the wood and ironing it for several minutes or until the ring disappears. This method is particularly effective for new water spots.
