How to Make Transverse Drapes

Traverse curtains move on a traverse rod track. This allows you to pull open the curtains with a cord instead of actually touching the curtains. The best kinds of curtains for a traverse rod are pleated curtains since they don’t have a pocket at the top. Pleated curtains look professional and understated in any room. Making the pleated drapes on your own is simple. A heavy, home décor fabric is best for traverse drapes.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length and width of your window from 3 inches above the traverse rod to the floor. Measure out two panels of fabric three times as wide the window and 10 inches longer, and cut out the fabric.

    • 2

Fold the bottom hem over by 1/2 inch toward the underside of the fabric. Iron the hem flat. Fold the bottom hem another 6 inches and iron it. Pin the hem and sew it with a 1/8 inch seam, a straight stitch and normal tension.

    • 3

Fold the top hem over toward the underside of the fabric by 1/2 inch and iron it. Turn the hem over by another 3 inches and iron it. Pin the hem and sew it with a 1/8 inch seam, a straight stitch and normal tension.

    • 4

Pin the pleat tape to the top of the curtain on the underside of the fabric about 1/2 inch below the top of the curtain. Sew the pleat tape in place with a straight stitch, a 1/8 inch seam and normal tension. Sew around the entire perimeter of the pleat tape.

    • 5

Fold both side hems over by 1/2 inch toward the underside of the fabric. Iron the hems. Fold the hem over again by 1/2 inch and iron them flat. Pin the hems in place. Sew the side hems with a straight stitch on normal tension and a 1/8 inch seam.

Lay the curtains underside up and insert the pleat hooks into the pleat tape’s pockets. Pinch the fabric together to insert all four prongs into the pleat tape. Space the hooks 5 to 6 inches apart.

Hang the pleated curtains by their hooks on the traverse rod.
