How to Fasten a Board to a Brick Wall

Exposed brick walls can lend a lot of historic charm to your room. However, this charm can evaporate the instant you want to hang something on them. Wood boards and shelving can be safely hung on brick, but you will need to use the right tools and the right hardware to get the job done properly. While it may not be easy as simply nailing a board into the wall, this project will ensure that your board stays where it belongs.

Instructions

    • 1

Mark off where you want the brackets for your board to go on the wall with a pencil. Use a measuring tape to make your placement exact. There should be at least two holes for a board less than two feet in length, three holes for a longer board -- one on each end and one in the middle.

    • 2

Drill through your marks with a masonry bit. Use a bit that is one size larger than the screws you will be using to accommodate the masonry anchors.

    • 3

Insert the masonry anchors into the wall by twisting them in. The top of the anchor should be flush with the wall if they are inserted properly.

    • 4

Line up one bracket on the wall and insert a screw through it into the masonry anchor. Tighten the screw until the head is just flush with the top of the masonry anchor. Repeat with the other brackets.

    • 5

Attach the board to the brackets with a cordless screwdriver. Insert your screws through the brackets into the bottom of the board.
