How to Make a Window Jabot

A window jabot is the draped fabric side section of a window swag -- a decorative window treatment used with blinds and shades. A window jabot delivers the most balanced look when it hangs to the bottom edge of a window or the floor. An uncomplicated swag and jabot treatment can be made with a no-sew technique, using decorator fabric. The jabot will drape with elegance when a luxurious fabric such as silk or velvet is used.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width of the window and add 6 inches to determine the size of the curtain rod. Install the decorative curtain rod 2 inches above the window, according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

    • 2

Measure the length of the window and double it. Measure the width of the window and double it. Add the measurements together to determine the fabric yardage needed.

    • 3

Turn the bottom unfinished edge of the yardage under 1 inch and press it in place, using the iron, on the ironing board. Slide the fusible hem webbing between the folded fabric and press it for 20 seconds with the hot iron. Repeat, to hem the opposite unfinished edge of the yardage. The finished long side edges of the fabric yardage, know as the selvages, does not require hemming.

    • 4

Slide the fabric in back of the left corner edge of the decorative rod, positioning the bottom of the left side jabot at the bottom of the left corner edge of the window.

    • 5

Pull the fabric over the front of the rod, allowing for an overhang of at least 6 inches. Slide the fabric length over the right top corner of the rod and pull it down from the back of the rod to position the right edge jabot.
