How to Sew a Blanket That Folds Into a Pillow

Sew a blanket that folds up to form a pillow and use it on long car trips, airplane rides or for simply relaxing in your living room. The blanket has a pocket in the center that you stuff the folded blanket into. The pillow/blanket, also called a planket or quillow, is simple to sew and a great gift idea for a frequent traveler or someone without much storage space in the home.

Things You'll Need

  • 2 yards of fleece, 60 inches wide, or 4 yards of soft fabric, 60 inches wide
  • Measuring tape
  • Scissors
  • Straight pins
  • Matching thread
  • Sewing machine

Instructions

    • 1

Cut two 18-inch squares from the fabric. Place the squares on top of each other, right sides facing in, and pin them. Sew the squares together along three sides with a 3/8-inch seam.

    • 2

Stitch along the edge of the opening on the squares with a zig-zag or blanket stitch if you're using fleece. Fold the edge of the fabric over 1/2-inch, then pin and sew it if you're using flannel or another fabric. Turn the squares right side out.

    • 3

Sew a blanket or zig-zag stitch along the edge of all four sides of the remaining fleece fabric. If you're using flannel or another soft fabric, cut the remaining fabric into two 54- by 60-inch pieces and place the pieces on top of each other, right sides facing in. Pin them together on all four sides then sew them with a 1/2-inch seam. Leave a 12-inch gap on one side. Turn the fabric right side out through the gap then sew the gap closed.

Place the 18-inch squares in the center of the blanket fabric, along the top edge. Pin the squares to the fabric on three sides, leaving the bottom side of the squares open. Sew the squares to the fabric on the three sides, 1/4-inch away from the edge.

Fold the sides of the blanket back, then fold the blanket up from the bottom, toward the opening on the squares. Stuff the blanket into the squares to form the pillow. Remove the fabric from the squares and unfold it to use as a blanket.
