How to Sew a Cupcake Pillow

If you're looking to amp up a room with a sweet theme, use a decorative cupcake pillow to add a cute and vibrant touch. Even though there are pre-made cupcake pillows available for purchase in some home stores and online, the truth is that you can create your own for a fraction of the cost and less effort than you think. The technique is simple enough to only require very basic sewing skills and craft supplies, and will yield a flat, pillow shaped like a cupcake.

Instructions

    • 1

Draw an outline of a cupcake in the exact size and shape that you wish for the pillow to be on a piece of butcher paper with a marker. Cut the pattern out using a pair of scissors.

    • 2

Double over enough brightly colored fabric in the color of your choice to cover the homemade pattern you created, whatever size that may be. The color should be the same shade you wish for the "frosting" on the cupcake to be, because even though the entire pillow will be this color, the "wrapper" area will be covered in a puffy paint design and will look different than the "cake" area. Secure the butcher paper pattern to the double layer of fabric using sewing pins.

    • 3

Cut around the cupcake shaped pattern to come out with two identical pieces of fabric. Remove the pattern and re-attach the sewing pins to secure the pieces on top of each other, with the front sides of the fabric facing in.

    • 4

Use a threaded needle or loaded sewing machine to outline the perimeter of the pillow case with stitches. Stop stitching when there are 2 inches left to close.

    • 5

Turn the pillow case right-side out through the hole you left. Shove enough cotton stuffing into the hole to completely fill the pillow, using a wooden dowel to push the stuffing into the corners.

    • 6

Sew the remaining 2 inches shut to create a cupcake shaped pillow. Knot the thread and cut the needle away using the scissors.

    • 7

Draw in the bottom of the cupcake frosting just over the wrapper area, in small puff shapes like a cloud, using fabric puffy paint in the color of your choice. Repeat on the other side and wait for the pillow to dry.

    • 8

Fill the entire cupcake wrapper section, made up of everything below the frosting puffy paint, with close-together vertical lines on both sides. Allow to dry.

    • 9

Use different colors of fabric puffy paint to create small dashes over the top of the pillow to serve as sprinkles.

    • 10

Add a dollop of hot glue to the top front center of the pillow and press a large red craft jewel over it to serve as a cherry. Hold in place until the glue dries completely.
