How to Paint Furniture Made Out of Plaster

Plaster furniture, such as tables and other pieces, are easily painted since the surface is smooth. However, plaster must be completely dry before you can properly apply paint. If the plaster has too much moisture, the paint will bubble and crack. Also, any sheen on the plaster must be removed prior to painting for the paint to stick well.

Instructions

    • 1

Set your plaster furniture in a room with a dehumidifier for two to three days to be sure the water is removed before painting.

    • 2

Use sandpaper to gently rub any shiny finish from the plaster. The plaster surface should be smooth and dull. If the surface is already dull then sanding isn't necessary.

    • 3

Vacuum up any plaster dust from the furniture with the brush attachment.

    • 4

Apply primer to the plaster furniture. Completely cover the piece with the primer and allow it to dry for one to two days.

    • 5

Paint over the furniture with plaster paint. Cover the entire piece with one coat of paint and allow it to dry for at least a day. Apply the second coat of paint after the first is totally dry.

    • 6

Paint plaster when the humidity is less than 50 percent.
