How to Paint Children's Furniture

Painting children's furniture is a way to personalize your child's room with her favorite colors, characters or theme. Whether you are refurbishing old furniture or painting unfinished furniture, this is a process you can do easily with some simple tools at home with very little effort. Be sure to use paint that is safe for children and that does not contain any lead, and paint in a well-ventilated area away from your child.

  • Paint brush

Instructions

    • 1

Move the wood furniture to a well-ventilated area, and place a tarp underneath to protect the flooring below.

    • 2

Sand the wood furniture lightly to remove any rough or bumpy spots. If the wood already has a coat of paint on it and you believe it may be lead-based paint, strip all the paint off; either by sanding or using a paint stripper liquid solution (purchased from your local hardware store).

    • 3

Paint a coat of primer over the entire piece of furniture. This will give you an even base as a blank canvas to start your painting. Allow the primer to dry completely, approximately 6 to 8 hours.

    • 4

Paint the entire piece of furniture in the color or design of your choice. Allow the paint to dry completely for approximately 6 to 8 hours.

    • 5

Paint a coat of clear acrylic sealer over the entire piece of furniture. Allow the sealant to dry for at least 6 tp 8 hours.

    • 6

Keep the furniture in a well-ventilated area for 2 to 3 days to allow any and all fumes to come off of the furniture. This will reduce the amount of toxins released into the child's room, and reduce the harsh chemical-based smell the paint and sealant can leave behind.

    • 7

Move the furniture into your child's room.
