Paintable Wallpaper vs. Vinyl Wallpaper

Wallpaper is available in various colors and designs to allow you a virtually endless array of options for your designing needs. In addition, wallpaper comes in different types such as vinyl and paintable. Each type of wallpaper has its own set of pros and cons that you should take into consideration before purchasing the wallpaper.
  1. Vinyl Wallpaper

    • Vinyl wallpaper can refer to either pure vinyl attached to a paper, fabric or laminated backing or wallpaper with an acrylic or vinyl coating added on top of the wallpaper. Both types of vinyl wallpaper are commonly used in kitchens and bathrooms since they withstand grease and humidity fluctuations relatively well. Furthermore, vinyl wallpaper is easy to clean and can be gently scrubbed with all-purpose cleaner or soapy water when dirty. Some vinyl wallpapers contain a mildew blocker that lowers the chance of fungus growth and works well in bathrooms.

    Paintable Wallpaper

    • Designed to withstand several layers of paint, paintable wallpaper gives you the option of wallpaper with the ability to paint the surface to match any decor. Some paintable wallpaper has an embossed design or texture on the surface that will show through the paint. These designs or texture can mimic the look of real wood, fabric and plaster. Paintable wallpaper installation is the same as other types of wallpaper and will last for many years with the proper care and cleaning. In addition, paintable wall coverings are available in border sizes to enhance your wall.

    Differences

    • The main difference between paintable wallpaper and vinyl wallpaper is the ability to paint on one but not the other. Paint cannot adhere correctly to vinyl wallpaper, and trying to paint it will leave you with a mess. In addition, paintable wallpaper is generally white in color and after installation is meant to be painted. Furthermore, paintable wallpaper can be more expensive than vinyl wallpaper depending on the brand, type and size of the wallpaper you purchase. Before buying the wall covering, consider your redecorating budget.

    Considerations

    • For best results, always follow the installation and care instructions included with the brand and type of wallpaper you purchase. If you do not plan to paint the wallpaper after installing it on the wall, choose vinyl over paintable wallpaper.
