DIY: Light Fixture Stand

Growing plants inside requires a light source. Fluorescent lights tend to be the fixture of choice for most growers, but the lights require a stand to hold them above plants. Instead of investing a large amount of money for a fixture to hold the light, you can make your own out of PVC. PVC is inexpensive and lightweight, making it simple to construct and easy to move.

Instructions

    • 1

Use a paintbrush to apply PVC glue to both ends of a 48-inch-long PVC pipe. Place a PVC T-joint on each end of the pipe. Put the perpendicular arm of the T-joint on the PVC pipe, with the parallel arms out to either side. Alight both T-joints so they’re pointing the same direction.

    • 2

Apply more PVC glue to the ends of four 2-inch PVC pieces. Insert the pieces into all four of the open ends on the two T-joints. Push in the 2-inch pieces, so 1 inch is inside the joint and 1 inch is outside the joint.

    • 3

Coat the ends of all four 2-inch pieces with more PVC glue. Place a 45-degree corner joint on each piece. Align the joints in the same direction.

    • 4

Apply PVC glue to the ends of each pipe. Insert a 9-inch PVC pipe into each of the four 45-degree corner joints. On the other end of each pipe, add another 45-degree corner joint. Adjust the corner joints so they are pointing the same direction as the first set of 45-degree corner joints.

    • 5

Add more PVC glue to the ends of four 12-inch PVC pipes. Put the pipes into the open ends of each 45-degree corner joint. Coat the other ends of the pipes with glue, and insert each of them into a T-joint. Align the T-joint to run parallel to the first set of T-joints.

    • 6

Apply PVC glue to each of the T-joints, then insert another 2-inch piece into each of the T-joints. As you did with the first set of 2-inch pieces, put 1 inch into the joint, and leave out 1 inch. Attach a 90-degree corner joint to the end of each 2-inch pipe. Position the pipes so they face the 90-degree angle joint on the opposite side.

    • 7

Finish the base of the fixture by applying PVC glue to both ends of two 48-inch PVC pipes. Insert the pipes into the open ends of the 90-degree corner joint.

    • 8

Measure the eye hook placement from the edge of the fixture. Measure the same distance in from the ends of the first 48-inch pipe. Mark the placement on the top of the pipe. Use a 1/4-inch drill bit to drill through the top of the pipe, straight through the bottom of the pipe on both marks.

    • 9

Twist a 1/4-inch-wide eye bolt into the bottom of the pipe at each hole. Once the end of the eye bolt comes out the other side, secure it with a nut. Twist the nut until it sits snuggly against the pipe.

    • 10

Attach a chain to each of the eye hooks in the light and the other end to the eye bolt in the pipe. The length of the chain depends on how close you want the light to the plant.
