Measure the width of your bed. Add 1 foot to this measurement. Determine how high you want the headboard to stand. Double both the width and height measurement. Use these calculations to determine how much plywood you will need and to ensure you buy enough batting and fabric to cover the front of the headboard.
Cut one of your plywood boards into a piece that is 1 foot wider than your bed frame and matches the desired height of your finished headboard. This will be the main piece of your headboard. From the second board, cut two rectangles that measure as high as the main piece of the headboard but only a quarter of the width. These will serve as the wings.
Place the three plywood pieces on the ground face down. Line up the long sides of the pieces and place the wings on the left and right of the main headboard piece. Center one hinge between the main headboard piece and the left wing. Screw in place using the screws provided with the hinge and an electric screwdriver or cordless drill with a screwdriver bit. Repeat on the right side.
Cover the front of the headboard with a spray adhesive product. Place batting on the front of the headboard. Wrap batting around to the backside, as you would wrap a present. Turn the plywood headboard over so the hinges are on the backside. Secure the batting by applying staples around the perimeter of the backside of the headboard. Apply more layers as necessary to make the headboard as plush as you desire. Carefully cut the batting and around the hinges to wrap the upholstery smoothly.
Wrap the upholstery fabric around the headboard, using the same technique described in Step 4.
Screw D-ring hooks to the back of the headboard, 8 to 12 inches from the top of the headboard. Nail two nails into the wall at the point where the headboard should hang. Use a stud finder and nail directly into a stud for added security, if desired. Hang the D-ring hooks on the nails.
