Fun Ways to Feng Shui My Bedroom

Feng shui is more than just a decorating style. The term "feng shui" means "wind and water" and involves the arrangement of your space, and placement of decor to achieve harmony with the surroundings in which you dwell. Trying to feng shui your bedroom doesn't have to result in headaches and confusion. Follow a few simple basic rules to make the process fun.
  1. The Bed

    • Position your bed with the foot toward the door, known as the "command" position. This promotes security as you can always see the doorway when you're lying in bed. The head of your bed shouldn't be near a window because this allows your energy to be drawn out the window. Use calming color combinations for your bed linens, such as blue and green, or blue and brown. Avoid using the space beneath your bed as a storage center. Instead, the area underneath your bed should be free of clutter to allow energy to flow freely around you.

    Connection and Balance

    • Balance promotes equality in your relationship.

Flank your bed with two round end tables; harsh corners should be avoided because they break up positive, harmonic energy. If you and a partner sleep in the bed together, balance your rounded-end bedside tables with matching lamps and equal numbers of items on the tables, such as one lamp, one book and one plant on each table. Creating connection and balance in the room furthers the peaceful energy that helps foster a good night's sleep and relaxed feeling.

    Add Nature and Inspiration

    • Bring nature and beauty into your feng shui bedroom.

Wake up to natural beauty and inspiration each morning to begin your day with a calm, positive, energetic spirit. Position a dresser or decorative table opposite the foot of your bed so it's in your line of vision when you first wake up. Decorate the dresser or tabletop with one or two green plants, a favorite work of art or photograph and an element of water, such as a shallow vase with floating candles or tabletop water fountain.

    Remove Stressful Clutter

    • Clutter in your bedroom introduces negative energy while reducing the flow of positive, harmonic energy. Electronics, such as computers and televisions, should be removed or kept in an enclosed cabinet. Keep closet and attached bathroom doors closed so you're not greeted with their interiors first thing in the morning or remembering them as you fall asleep. Avoid piles of books and magazines on bedside tables and place dirty laundry in a closed hamper when you get undressed. If lack of space requires you to keep more in your bedroom than you wish, use natural woven baskets with lids to store your items and add another element of nature to your bedroom.
