Select the base for your acrylic bar top. Because the base on which you layer the acrylic will be visible, you want something attractive such as polished hardwood.
Put safety first. Wear safety goggles when mixing and applying acrylic resin and make sure your work area is well ventilated. Keep open flames away from the work area.
Measure the length and width of the bar top base. Cut metal or glass strips to match your measurements and form a frame around the edges of the base. You can also use plastic if it is a type that does not react with acrylic resin. Use plumber’s tape to secure the frame tightly in place around the edges of the base. The frame should extend far enough above the surface of the bar top base to allow for holding the acrylic resin until it cures. Seal the seams between the base and frame with plumber’s tape placed on the outside of the frame.
Clean the surface of the bar top base thoroughly and allow it to dry completely. Any dirt or debris that is on the surface cannot be removed once you apply the acrylic resin.
Mix some of the acrylic resin and catalyst according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Pour just enough to create a thin layer that entirely covers the surface of the bar top base. Allow this layer to set for about an hour.
Arrange your decorative objects on the surface of the bar top. Try not to slide objects around and do not touch the acrylic layer with your fingers. If you do, your fingerprints may become a permanent part of your new bar top.
Mix and apply enough resin and catalyst to completely cover the decorative items you’ve added to your bar top. Allow the acrylic to cure for 24 hours before you remove the frame. Use a file and buffer to smooth and polish the edges of the bar top.
