How to Build a Table

If you have a little bit of know-how and a knack for putting together premade projects, you should be able to tackle this basic table project. Essentially, a table is a top, four legs, and a support structure underneath. At your local home improvement store, you'll find a variety of pieces to choose from, and using the steps below, you'll have your custom table together in no time.

Things You'll Need

  • 4 precut table legs (matching)
  • 1 precut table top
  • 4 precut 2' x 4' pieces of wood for top rails

Instructions

    • 1

Decide what size your want your table to be. Once you choose your table top, measure a square underneath to determine the size of the 2' x 4' planks and corner supports you will need. If you've never done this before, enlist help at your local home improvement store. Have them double-check your measurements.

    • 2

Back at home, lay out all your materials in your workspace. Place your table top upside down and place the 2' x 4' planks in their appropriate places along the square measured in step 1. These are your top rails, and will support the legs from underneath. Position the rails so that they meet at the corners and are centered on the underside of your table.

    • 3

Place the fillets on the inside of the rectangle you've created with the top rails. The fillets will be used to secure the rails to the table top. First, screw the fillets into the table top, then screw the rail into the fillet to create a secure fit. Do this for each rail until your table support is completely secure.

    • 4

Once your rails are screwed into the fillets, you'll need to attach your corner supports. Place one support in each corner, then screw both sides into the adjacent top rail. Do this for all four corner supports.

    • 5

Drill a hole through the center of each corner support. This is where you will affix your legs. Since you bought precut legs, they should already be drilled to fit.

    • 6

Working one corner at a time, place each leg in place. Using your coach bolt, secure the leg from the outside to the inside of your corner support. Screw the cap into each bolt.

Once everything is secure, turn your table over, and you are done!
