How to Hang Stockings From a String on a Mantel

When the holidays roll around, you need to find an attractive way to display those Christmas stockings for the kids and grandkids. You can create an eye-catching display year after year by hanging those stockings on a string attached to your fireplace mantel. The beauty of using a string is that you can add and remove stockings whenever you want. When relatives you have not seen in some time drop in, you can simply add a stocking and holder to the string, and you'll be set for a wonderful celebration.

Things You'll Need

  • Measuring tape
  • Nails
  • Hammer
  • Stocking hangers
  • Scissors

Instructions

    • 1

Measure your mantel from end to end. Cut a decorative string to the proper length, which should be an inch or two longer than the mantel.

    • 2

Position a decorative nail at an angle at one end of your mantel. Lift the nail, and place the string underneath it.

    • 3

Hammer the nail through the string until it is firmly holding the string in place. If you wish, use a nail with a decorative head.

    • 4

Extend the string to the other end of the mantel, and position a nail as you did at the other end of the mantel. Keep the string as taut as you can so that the stockings don't droop when you hang them. Pound the nail through the string until it is holding the string securely.

    • 5

Clip off excess string at each end of the mantel. Attach a stocking holder to each stocking you want to hang. Then hang each stocking holder on the string. Place each stocking on the string.
