How to Make a Window Frame Look Distressed

Distressed window frames can add charm to your home decor. If your style is rustic, shabby chic or old world, a window frame that looks brand new may clash with you other pieces of furniture. Distressing is a technique that will make a newer piece look old through painting and sanding. Pick colors that match the hues in your existing decor to tie the room together.

Instructions

    • 1

Apply painter’s tape around the window frame to protect the areas of the window you do not want to paint.

    • 2

Paint the window frame in the color you want for the base. This color will show through once the distressing technique is complete. Allow the base coat to dry.

    • 3

Rub a tapered candle along the frame where you want the base coat to show through. The wax will prevent the top coat from adhering.

    • 4

Paint the frame in the top coat color of your choice. Allow the paint to dry.

    • 5

Rub fine grit sandpaper over the area that you applied the candle wax. Rub until the base coat shows through.

    • 6

Wipe away the paint dust with a tack cloth.

    • 7

Paint the frame with a polyurethane sealant.
