How to Paint Things to Make Them Look Rusted

House paint has come a long way over the years. Walls, doors and decorative home accessories no longer have to be dull and boring. Attractive faux finishes can be achieved easily with ordinary home or craft paint, glaze, sponges and other inexpensive materials. The best part is it can be painted over when a new look is desired. Faux rust finishes are especially popular today. The rich, warm look of aged rust is suitable for most any surface.

Instructions

    • 1

Prepare the surface accordingly. Lightly sand wood and metal surfaces to better accept paint. Wipe ordinary wall board walls with a damp cloth.

    • 2

Apply a base coat of burn sienna with a paint roller or paintbrush. Allow the paint to dry completely. Apply a second coat and let it dry overnight.

    • 3

Crumple a piece of cheesecloth in a ball and dip a corner in a small amount of metallic glaze. Blot the metallic glaze over the burnt sienna base coat using a dabbing motion. Move the cheesecloth around to achieve a random pattern. Cover the entire surface with the metallic glaze. It is not necessary for this glaze to dry before proceeding.

Dip a sea sponge in water. Squeeze out all the excess water. Dab the sea sponge in some dark brown glaze. Apply the brown glaze in the same manner as the metallic glaze. Allow the glaze to dry overnight.
