Instructions

    • 1

Remove all outlet and switch plate covers with a screwdriver and take down all wall hangings.

    • 2

Use a putty knife to patch any nail holes or cracks with a spackle compound.

    • 3

Mix a mild detergent and water in a bucket. Dip a cloth in the mixture and clean any grease or dirt on the walls.

    • 4

Cover the floor, furniture and other surfaces in the room with plastic drop cloths.

    • 5

Use painter's tape to cover any areas you do not want painted, such as baseboards or ceiling edges.

    • 6

Apply a coat of primer with a paint roller. Allow it to dry.

    • 7

Paint the walls with your base coat color using a paint roller for larger areas and a paintbrush for hard-to-reach edges and corners. Allow the paint to dry.

    • 8

Mix together four parts of glaze in a dark brown tone to one part of your paint color. Dampen a sea sponge and wring out any excess water. Dip the sponge into the glaze mixture and blot the excess on a paper towel. Press the sponge against the wall and rotate it in different directions to create textures similar to that of an old, rustic wall. Allow to dry.

Apply a clear water-based polyurethane over the faux finish with a paint roller to help protect the surface of the walls.
