Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width of the window with the tape measure and add 6 inches to this measurement. Find a sturdy stick to use as a curtain rod -- at least 3/4 inch to 1 inch in diameter and at least as long as the adjusted width of the window. Shorten the stick by sawing off some length with the handsaw, if necessary. Remove any smaller branches from the stick, if necessary, by sawing them off.

    • 2

Measure the placement of the mounting brackets for the rod brackets, positioning them about 2 inches diagonally above the upper left and right corners of the window. Make marks with the pencil through the holes in the brackets to mark the points where you must make holes.

    • 3

Drill pilot holes at the pencil marks. Position the brackets over the pilot holes and drive the screws into the wall with the screwdriver.

    • 4

Measure the length of the window with the tape measure from the curtain rod brackets to the bottom edge of the window. Add 2 1/2 inches to this measurement.

    • 5

Cut a piece of burlap fabric that is two times as wide as the window and equal to the adjusted length of the window.

    • 6

Lay the burlap flat on a work surface with the top and bottom edge of the burlap oriented correctly in front of you. Begin pulling horizontal threads out along the bottom edge of the burlap to create a fringe. Continue pulling these threads until you create about 1 inch of fringe along the bottom edge of the curtains.

    • 7

Fold under the top edge of the burlap 2 1/2 inches and crease the fold lightly. Stitch this fold along the raw edge of the burlap with the sewing machine.

    • 8

Slide the burlap fabric over the stick through the rod pocket you sewed. Place the stick onto the curtain rod brackets to hang the curtains. Arrange the fabric along the stick evenly.
