How to Install Crown Molding

Materials Needed:

- Crown molding (the amount needed will depend on the size of your room and the width of the molding)

- Adhesive (such as LIQUID NAILS)

- Nails or brads (1-1/4")

- Miter saw

- Tape measure

- Pencil

- Level

- Caulk

- Paint (optional)

Instructions:

1. Measure the Wall

- Determine how much crown molding you will need. Measure the width of each wall on which you are planning to install crown molding, leaving two to three extra feet for waste and mistakes.

>_Tip:_ If the ceiling has curves or angles, measure the ceiling at the widest point and add extra footage for the curves and angles.

2. Cut the Crown Molding

- Set up your miter saw at 45-degree angle. Start by cutting the first piece of crown molding; cut the left side at a 45-degree angle. This is called a "left-hand" crown.

>_Note:_ If you are using a coping saw instead of a miter saw, you will need to cut the left side at a 90-degree angle and then use the coping saw to create the 45-degree angle.

- Measure and cut the second piece of crown molding so that the right side is cut at a 45-degree angle; this is called a "right-hand" crown. Continue measuring and cutting the remaining crown molding pieces, alternating between left-hand and right-hand pieces.

3. Install the Crown Molding

- Start by installing the left-hand crown in the corner of the room. Apply a bead of adhesive to the back of the crown molding and nail it to the wall and ceiling using the 1-1/4" nails or brads.

>_Tip:_ Place a scrap piece of wood between the molding and the nail gun to prevent marring the molding.

- Continue installing the left-hand crown pieces along the wall, making sure the corners are tight. When you reach the end of a wall, if there is a gap between the molding and the ceiling, cut another left-hand crown at a 45-degree angle and use caulk to fill in the gap.

- When installing the right-hand crown, start in the corner where the left-hand crown ends. Apply a bead of adhesive to the back of the molding before nailing it to the wall and ceiling.

- Continue installing the right-hand crown pieces along the wall, making sure the corners are tight. When you reach the corner, the left and right-hand crown pieces should meet together. Trim as necessary and use caulk to fill any gaps.

- Repeat the steps above to install crown molding on all the walls in the room.

4. Caulk and Paint (Optional)

- Once all the crown molding has been installed, caulk any gaps between the molding and the wall and ceiling. Wipe away any excess caulk with a damp cloth.

>_Tip:_ If you notice nail holes, fill them with wood putty before painting.

- (Optional) Paint the crown molding to match the color of your walls or ceiling. Allow the paint to dry thoroughly before moving furniture or hanging curtains.

_Bonus Tip:_ If you are looking to add a more elaborate look to your crown molding, you can use decorative molding to create a more detailed design. Decorative molding is available in various styles and can add a unique touch to your room.
