5. Scissors

6. Ruler

7. Fabric pen or pencil

Measurements:

Size:

- Cover Fabric (2 Pieces): 12 inches by 10 inches

- Interfacing (2 Pieces): 12 inches by 10 inches

- Inside Pages (Folded): 8.5 inches by 11 inches

#### Paper:

- Folded in half to be 8.5 inches by 5.5 inches

- You can use regular printer paper or thicker cardstock for a more durable journal.

Fabric Preparation

Step 1: Pre-wash and Iron:

- Pre-wash your chosen fabric to remove any shrinkage or stiffness.

- Iron the fabric to ensure it's flat and smooth.

Step 2: Trace Cover Shapes:

- Use your fabric pen or pencil to trace two rectangles measuring 12 inches by 10 inches onto the fabric (these will be the front and back covers).

Interfacing

Step 1: Cut Interfacing:

- Cut two pieces of interfacing the same size as your fabric covers (12 inches by 10 inches).

- The interfacing will help give the journal covers some structure and stiffness.

Step 2: Attach Interfacing:

- Place one piece of interfacing on the wrong side of each fabric cover.

- Fuse it in place following the manufacturer's instructions.

Sewing the Journal Cover:

Step 1: Pin Covers:

- Place the two fabric covers right sides together, with the interfacing facing inwards.

- Pin them together along the edges, leaving the long side (10-inch edge) open.

Step 2: Stitch Together:

- Stitch around the pinned edges using a 1/4 inch seam allowance, leaving the long side open.

Turning and Pressing

Step 1: Trim Corners:

- Trim the corners of the cover to reduce bulk.

Step 2: Turn Cover:

- Carefully turn the cover right side out through the open side.

- Use a point turner or other blunt object to gently push out the corners.

Step 3: Press Cover:

- Press the cover flat, ensuring the seams lie flat.

Topstitch Edge:

Step 1: Pin Cover:

- Fold the remaining 1/2 inch of the open side of the cover inward and pin it in place.

- Make sure to tuck in any raw edges.

Step 2: Stitch Edge:

- Stitch along the folded edge using a top stitching stitch, about 1/8 inch from the edge.

Preparing Paper:

Step 1: Cut Pages:

- Cut your paper to the desired size (8.5 inches by 11 inches).

Step 2: Fold Pages:

- Fold each sheet in half to create a folded size of 8.5 inches by 5.5 inches.

Assembling the Journal:

Step 1: Gather Pages:

- Gather your folded paper pages and arrange them in the desired order.

Step 2: Stitch Journal:

- Insert the folded paper pages into the cover.

- Fold the cover over the edges of the paper and stitch them together along the folded edge.

Finishing Touches

Step 1: Optional Add-Ons:

- Add any decorative elements you prefer, such as buttons, ribbons, or lace, to the cover of your journal.

Step 2: Glue Spine (Optional):

- For extra durability, you can apply a thin line of glue along the spine of the journal to hold the pages together.

Step 3: Trim Pages (Optional):

- If desired, use a paper cutter or scissors to trim the edges of the pages to match the cover.

Your handmade journal is now complete and ready to be filled with your thoughts, memories, or creative ideas!
