How to Make Washable Fabric Bowl Covers

Making reusable fabric bowl covers is an eco-friendly and cost-effective way to cover and store your bowls. These bowl covers are also great for keeping your food fresh and preventing spills. Here's a simple guide to make your own washable fabric bowl covers:

Materials:

- Fabric (cotton, canvas, or any other sturdy fabric)

- Elastic cord (1/4-inch or 3/8-inch wide)

- Sewing machine

- Scissors

- Measuring tape

- Pins

- Iron

Instructions:

Step 1: Measure Your Bowls

- First, you'll need to measure the diameter of the bowls you want to cover. For each bowl, measure the widest point across the top. Write down these measurements.

Step 2: Cut the Fabric

- Cut two pieces of fabric for each bowl cover. The size of each fabric piece should be approximately 2 inches wider than the diameter of the bowl and 12 inches long. So, if your bowl has a diameter of 6 inches, cut the fabric pieces to be 8 x 12 inches each.

Step 3: Fold the Fabric Pieces

- Fold each fabric piece in half lengthwise (right sides together) and press. Then, open it up and fold each side in 1 inch, pressing again. Unfold the fabric pieces.

Step 4: Pin the Casing

- Fold down the top edge of each fabric piece by 1/2 inch and press. Then, fold it down again by 3/4 inch and press. Pin this folded edge in place.

Step 5: Stitch the Casing

- Stitch along the folded edge close to the inner fold, creating a casing for the elastic cord. Leave a small opening in the stitching to insert the elastic cord later.

Step 6: Cut the Elastic Cord

- Cut a piece of elastic cord for each bowl cover. Measure the length of elastic needed by wrapping it around the bowl rim and adding an additional 2-3 inches for seam allowance.

Step 7: Insert the Elastic Cord

- Insert one end of the elastic cord into the casing, using a safety pin to help guide it through. Pull the elastic cord through the casing until the other end comes out the opposite side.

Step 8: Sew the Elastic Cord Ends

- Overlap the ends of the elastic cord by about 1 inch and stitch them together securely.

Step 9: Finish the Bowl Covers

- Fold the fabric pieces in half again (right sides together) and stitch the side seams closed, leaving the top edge open. Trim any excess fabric or threads and turn the bowl covers right side out. Iron flat to remove wrinkles.
