Decorating Ideas for a Room With Brown & Blue Colors

Brown and blue can create a natural, calming environment or a funky and modern vibe, depending on the shades and details you use when decorating your home. Mix a few different shades of blue and brown or stick with one shade of each color, depending on your style. Choose hues of each color that make you feel comfortable.
  1. Living Room

    • Your living room or family room should feel tranquil to you, your family and guests you choose to invite into your home. Paint the walls a soothing shade of blue or a creamy taupe or beige to create a relaxed environment. Dark brown leather sofas work with either color on the walls, while blue furniture looks best against creamy beige-colored walls. Dark chocolate tables will work with light furniture and walls, keeping all the colors in the room related to the blue and brown color scheme. Hang bright blue or soft beige curtains and ground the furniture with a blue and brown rug that repeats the shades on the walls and furniture. Use a few bright blue throw pillows, lamps, vases or flowers to add excitement and a refreshing feeling to the room.

    Dining Room

    • Dining rooms should create a warm feeling that makes you want to linger over an intimate conversation long after dinner and dessert are done. Choose a rich, deep shade for the walls, such as a warm navy blue, chocolate brown, espresso or coffee color. Lighten the look with white trim and wainscoting for a formal look. A chocolate brown or glass table will work with light blue upholstered chairs. Set the table with a light blue runner, white dishes, light blue linen napkins and a clear vase with white and light blue flowers. Votive candles can be placed along the runner for an intimate feel.

    Kitchen

    • Pair chocolate brown or light, natural wood tones with a light blue, such as robin's egg, in the kitchen. Solid white dishes or a strong blue design on white dishes and tiles is another option. Weave the colors throughout the kitchen with blue and brown dish towels, salt and pepper shakers, cookie jars and canisters that hold frequently used ingredients, such as flour or sugar. Carry the color scheme into the breakfast area with chair cushions and place mats in the same patterns as the dish towels. Plaid, floral and striped patterns in blue and brown work well in the kitchen.

    Bedroom

    • The bedroom is one room that requires a tranquil setting to help you get a peaceful night's rest. Keep the room calming with lighter colors or mix it up with a warm, deep brown and bright aqua or teal shade of blue. Chocolate brown furniture works against blue-gray walls with light blue bedding and accessories, or opt for white furniture with blue bedding against deep brown walls. Use patterns, such as a wall with a grid of squares in various shades of brown and blue for a modern twist or a brown and blue damask or floral wallpaper for a French country feel.

    Bathroom

    • Brown and blue can create a modern bathroom with cream, blue and brown circles and stripes on the walls or a soothing, spa-like bathroom with light blues and browns. Keep the walls white, beige or an icy blue and use deeper browns to contrast the cold blues with warmth. Fluffy chocolate brown towels tied with brown ribbons or embroidered with blue stitching will unite the two colors. A striped or polka-dotted shower curtain will enliven the room.
