Decorating Ideas for a Brown and White Room

When you are decorating a room in your home, sometimes your ideas start with a color. Perhaps you know that you want to paint a room brown and white but are unsure of what style to go with. Brown and white are neutral colors that fit many different decorating themes. Different painting techniques can help make a one-of-kind space for you and your family.
  1. Nature

    • Brown and white are common colors throughout nature. Nature is beautiful to bring into the home. Arrange branches into a vase to set on a table. Paintings or photographs of nature are a good addition for wall décor. When you use photographs, use brown and white matting to add to the brown and white décor. You can add texture and dimension to the room by using a variety of shades of brown. Try mixing and matching fabric textures on bedding or sofas. Leather furniture works well when decorating with a nature theme, and so do leather decorations, such as picture frames. Add texture to the walls by rag-rolling or sponging on different shades of paint.

    Stripes

    • Think stripes in the paint on the walls for something different when you decide to decorate in brown and white. Use brown and white for a stark contrast, or for less contrast, use tan or cream. When you paint stripes on the walls, it is not necessary to use much wall décor. Hang a picture or two, but keep these to a minimum to highlight the stripes. Keep the fabrics in the room plain-colored. Using fabrics with textures or tone-on-tone will work well. Tone-on-tone fabrics are one color but have a distinct design in the fabric.

    Exposed Beams

    • Exposed beams can make a great addition to any room of the home. Stain the beams brown, and paint the ceiling and walls white. The exposed beans are the highlight of the room and can create a warm atmosphere. Use fabrics and decorations to dress up the room. When painting the walls white, use brown accessories for wall decor. Add a little touch of color with greens or blues if desired.

    Warmth

    • Create a warm room by painting the walls a deep brown color. Paint the trim with white or off-white. Purchase white furniture, and decorate that with brown and tan pillows. Find pillows with prints, stripes and floral designs in shades of brown and white. Use lots of pillows and throw blankets to add to the warmth of the room. Baskets make good storage for extra blankets and pillows. Small baskets, placed on tables, can hold remotes. Other baskets placed around the room can hold magazines. Leather ottomans also make good storage space for extras.
