How to Decorate Around Exposed Brick

If your apartment or house has an exposed brick wall, you may be keen to highlight the rustic -- yet modern -- look of the brick while drawing the rest of the room together. Choose a complementary color of paint for the nonbrick portions of the room and decorations to make the brick stand out.

Gather a dozen or so paint samples and bring them home if you own your place or have permission from your landlord to paint. Compare the samples against the exposed brick wall, so you have the benefit of the brick as well as the proper lighting. The perfect color to paint the other walls will depend on the color of your brick as well as your personal preferences. A dark-red brick would look beautiful against a light-green painted wall, for instance. A brown-brick wall would be dashing next to yellow walls. Light, neutral colors may help the bricks stand out more, and matching tones will create a blended look.

Paint the walls the color you choose, protecting the exposed brick wall with tarps and painter's tape as you work.

    • 3

Hang just a few pieces of framed art or photographs; too many may make the wall appear cluttered or overwhelming. Single, large pieces work well, too, and the brick surface will help the art or photograph stand out.

Add attractive, sturdy and simple furniture to the room. Ensuring comfort and relaxation is important but avoid overstuffed furniture that might make the room appear more crowded than it is. The exposed brick adds texture and interest, so use your furniture to further accent the walls, not overpower them.
