How to Sandblast a Brick House

Sandblasting is a cleaning process that involves the use of an air compressor to shoot harsh, abrasive sand into a surface such as metal, brick or wood. Sandblasting is often meant to remove rust and bonded material like mortar or paint. Sandblasting is such a destructive process that not only does it remove the bonded material, but it often removes the top layer of whatever is underneath.

Instructions

    • 1

Tape plastic sheeting to the walls that you don't plan to sandblast. Use extra strong tape and thick plastic sheeting. This step is crucial for protecting the parts of the wall that you don't want to sand blast. Remember to tape up other parts of the wall--not just the brick. This includes windows and trim.

    • 2

Put on protective clothing and a protective plastic mask. You should wear long sleeves, long pants and gloves.

    • 3

Load the sandblaster chamber with sand. Follow the manufacturer's instructions.

    • 4

Turn on the sand blaster and test a small area of brick. Try to find the distance between the sand blaster and the brick wall that allows you to strip the paint (or whatever you're trying to strip) from the wall without damaging the brick too much. Move slowly up and down, reloading the sand blaster as you go.
