How to Make Arched Cabinets Look Like Shaker Cabinets

Originating with American religious groups in the early 1800s, Shaker style focuses on simplicity. Cabinets reflecting Shaker style are simple, warm and casual. They are constructed with straight, clean lines. Arched cabinets are designed with a curved, sweeping ornamental arch across the top of each door, imparting a sophisticated, elegant flair. Refacing cabinets changes the look of your cabinets without replacing them. New cabinet doors and paint can transform your arched cabinets into Shaker-style cabinets without breaking the bank.

  • Screwdriver
  • Clean cloths
  • Mild detergent
  • 150-grit sandpaper

Instructions

    • 1

      Purchase Shaker-style cabinet doors to replace your current cupboard doors.

      Remove current cabinet doors with a screwdriver.

      Clean cabinet stiles (vertical frames), rails (horizontal frames) and sides with a clean cloth dipped in a mixture of mild detergent and warm water. Dry thoroughly.

      Sand exposed cabinet surfaces with 150-grit sandpaper and wipe down with a damp cloth.

      Lay plastic drop cloths on the floor and other surrounding surfaces before applying primer and paint.

      Roll on paint primer to prepare cabinet surfaces for painting. Allow primer to dry at least two hours before sanding.

      Sand primed cabinet surfaces lightly with 150-grit sandpaper and wipe down with a damp cloth.

      Brush paint onto cabinet surfaces in a color that matches the new Shaker-style cabinet doors. You can choose a paint color that complements your new cabinet doors and kitchen decor in lieu of selecting a matching paint color. For example, painting the cabinet box black would enhance cherry cabinet doors and black granite countertops. Allow the paint to dry at least two hours and apply a second coat.

      Install new cabinet doors by drilling holes in them to match screw holes in existing hinges attached to the cabinet box. Use a screwdriver to attach Shaker-style cabinet doors to hinges with screws.
