Ingredients:
For the Cake:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 and 1/2 cups granulated sugar
- 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 and a half teaspoons baking powder
- 1 and a half teaspoons baking soda
- 1 and a half teaspoons salt
- 2 eggs
- 1 cup whole milk
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 cup boiling water
For the Frosting:
- 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
- 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 3 and 1/2 cups confectioners' sugar
- 6-7 tablespoons heavy cream
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- Pink food coloring (optional, for a pink heart)
Instructions:
1. Prepare the Pans:
- Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
2. Make the Heart Template:
- On a piece of parchment paper, draw a large heart shape that is about 6-7 inches in width. Cut out the heart shape. This will serve as the template for the heart-shaped cake layer.
3. Make the Cake Batter:
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla extract.
- Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix until just combined. Do not overmix.
- Pour in the boiling water and mix until the batter is smooth.
4. Create the Heart-Shaped Layer:
- Place the parchment paper heart template inside one of the prepared cake pans.
- Pour half of the cake batter into the pan and spread it evenly.
- Carefully remove the parchment paper template.
- Pour the remaining cake batter into the second prepared cake pan.
5. Bake the Cakes:
- Bake both cakes in a preheated 350°F (175°C) oven for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Let the cakes cool completely in their pans before frosting.
6. Make the Chocolate Frosting:
- In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter until smooth and creamy.
- Sift in the cocoa powder and confectioners' sugar. Mix until combined.
- Gradually add heavy cream and vanilla extract until the frosting reaches a spreadable consistency.
- If desired, add a few drops of pink food coloring to create a pink frosting for the heart.
7. Assemble the Cake:
- Place one of the cooled cake layers on a serving plate or cake stand.
- Spread some of the chocolate frosting evenly on top of the cake.
- Place the cake layer with the heart-cut portion facing upwards on top of the frosting.
- Spread the remaining frosting on the sides and top of the cake, making sure to cover the edges.
- Decorate the cake with additional frosting, sprinkles, or other decorations of your choice.
8. Refrigerate and Serve:
- Refrigerate the cake for at least 30 minutes before serving to allow the frosting to set.
- When you cut into the cake, the heart-shaped surprise will be revealed!
Enjoy your delicious and delightful hidden heart cake!
