How to Fix the Pully on a Broken Dryer

If you hear your dryer squealing during a cycle, there's a possibility that you've have a broken pulley in your appliance. The pulley inside the dryer sits on a swinging arm called the idler. Because pulleys are inexpensive, the best way to fix a pulley on a broken dryer is to replace the part.

      Unplug the dryer with the broken pulley from the power socket.

      Remove the bottom kick panel underneath the dryer door, if present, by pulling it straight back.

      Remove the lint trap from the dryer by pulling it out of the slot.

      Use a screwdriver to loosen the screws at the base of the control panel at the back of the machine.

      Insert a putty knife between the top of the dryer and the cabinet at the corner. Gently jimmy the knife up and down until the corner of the top of the dryer cover pops up. Repeat the process for the other corner.

      Lift up the top of the dryer. The control panel will swing back with it. Prop the top and panel up in place against a wall for support.

      Remove the wires from the door latch terminal by pulling them straight off the terminals. Before removal, make a note of which wire attaches to which terminal.

      Loosen the screws at the top corners of the dryer front and remove.

      Loosen the screws at either side of the bottom of the front panel.

      Grasp the drum with one hand. Take your other hand and gently pull the front panel back away from the drum and off the machine. Slowly lower the drum to rest on the bottom of the cabinet.

      Look in the back of the dryer cabinet for the idler pulley arm connected to the drum by the dryer belt. Press down on the idler pulley and remove the belt. Pull the pulley arm straight back off the pin hinge.

      Check the pulley for any damage. Pull off the pulley wheel, if needed, by loosening or prying off the pin holding the wheel in place. Replace the wheel and re-secure with the pin. Apply lubricant to the pulley wheel and arm.

      Replace the idler arm and pulley on the pin. Press the pulley back and slip the belt back over the pulley wheel.

      Lift up the drum and replace the front cabinet door by sliding it into place. Secure with the screws on each corner. Replace the bottom kick panel. Lower the top of the appliance into place. Secure the control panel with the screws.

      Plug the dryer back into the outlet.
