How to Remove the Oil Platform From a Refrigerator

According to the National Association of Home Builders, the average refrigerator has a life expectancy of 13 years, making it one of the most durable home components. This projection varies based on use and maintenance. The refrigerator’s oil platform -- more commonly known as the drain pan -- is one part of the appliance that should be removed and cleaned on a regular basis to remove the buildup of oil, water and debris that may accumulate.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the refrigerator from its power source, or switch the refrigerator’s circuit breaker off. This safety precaution will reduce the risk of electrocution, burns or fires.

    • 2

Locate the refrigerator’s grill. The grill is located on the front side of the refrigerator at the very bottom -- underneath the refrigerator door. Depending on the refrigerator’s model, the grill may be flush with the refrigerator door, or it may be recessed.

    • 3

Remove the refrigerator’s grill. Grasp the grill and pull it toward you to remove it. Move the grill out of the way.

    • 4

Locate the drain pan. You may have to use a flashlight to locate it.

    • 5

Remove the drain pan. Wearing gloves, carefully pull out the pan. It may contain water, oil and other substances, so exercise caution to ensure you don’t spill it. Also, observe the drain pan’s location to ensure you replace it in the exact same spot.

    • 6

Pour the liquid contents of the drain pan down the commode or sink.

    • 7

Clean the drain pan using warm water and either soap or baking soda.

    • 8

Carefully replace the drain pan, ensuring you place it back exactly where it had been.

    • 9

Place the grill securely back on the refrigerator, and restore the refrigerator’s power.
