How to Attach a Signal Arm to a Kenmore Ice Maker

A signal arm is a small metal rod that runs across the front section of a freezer ice maker. It often has a plastic flap connected to its bottom. When the arm is up, the ice maker is signaled to stop making ice; when the arm is down, the signal is sent to make ice. As the ice box fills, the arm gets pushed upwards to the "off" position. If you need to reattach or replace the signal arm, proper installation is important so the arm does not get stuck or fall off during use.

Instructions

    • 1

Hold the signal arm so it is in the down position. The loose ends should be facing the top of the ice maker.

    • 2

Locate the center slot on the plastic bushing section on the inside of the front section of the ice maker. The edge of the ice maker housing should surround part of the signal arm when installed.

    • 3

Locate the plastic flange piece just above the ice maker fill cup on the back section of the ice maker closest to the back of the freezer. There is a small hole in the center of the fill cup's plastic flange piece.

    • 4

Push the bent tip of the top of the back section of the signal arm into the flange piece's center hole.

    • 5

Grasp the center-bottom of the signal arm and gently lift it up into the "off" position. Let go of the arm and see if it stays in place. Gently push it down to the "on" position. This ensures the arm is properly installed.
