How to Freeze Sea Scallops

Step 1: Purchase fresh sea scallops

When choosing scallops, look for firm, plump ones with a briny aroma. Avoid any that are soft, discoloured, or have a strong odour.

Step 2: Clean the scallops

To clean the scallops, rinse them under cold water and gently remove any sand or grit. Pat the scallops dry with paper towels.

Step 3: Prepare the scallops for freezing

You can freeze scallops whole or cut them into smaller pieces. If you're freezing them whole, simply place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. If you're cutting them into pieces, do so before freezing.

Step 4: Freeze the scallops

Place the baking sheet with the scallops in the freezer and freeze for at least 2 hours, or until the scallops are frozen solid.

Step 5: Store the scallops

Once the scallops are frozen, transfer them to an airtight container or freezer bag and label it with the date. The scallops can be stored in the freezer for up to 3 months.

Tips for freezing sea scallops

* Freeze the scallops as soon as possible after purchasing them for the best quality.

* To prevent the scallops from sticking together, place a layer of parchment paper between each layer of scallops.

* If you're freezing the scallops whole, you can also add a little water to the container or freezer bag to help prevent them from drying out.

* When you're ready to use the scallops, thaw them in the refrigerator overnight or under cold running water.

* You can cook the scallops from frozen, but they may take a little longer to cook.
