How to Get Wax Paper Off a Glass Stove Top

Glass stove tops offer the convenience of one flat surface to clean rather than working around burners and soaking boil-overs off of drip pans -- but when things get stuck onto them, it can seem as though they’re stuck for good. Wax and waxed paper are of special concern because scraping them off could scratch the glass if incorrectly done. Harsh chemicals and abrasive cleansers also could damage the glass.

Instructions

    • 1

Place ice cubes on top of the waxed paper to harden it and make the wax brittle.

    • 2

Scrape as much of the waxed paper off the stove top as you can, using either the scraper that came with the stove or a hard plastic spatula.

    • 3

Squirt 1 to 2 teaspoons of dish-washing liquid into a bowl full of hot water. Stir it gently to mix.

    • 4

Soak a clean dish towel in the soapy water. Wring it out until it is just damp.

    • 5

Sprinkle 1 tablespoon or so of baking soda onto the damp, soapy towel and rub it into a paste.

    • 6

Scour the remaining wax paper with the baking soda paste. Vary your motions between circular, back and forth, and side to side to help loosen the wax paper.

    • 7

Wet the dish towel and apply more baking soda to it as needed.

    • 8

Soak a clean dish towel in clean water and wipe away all the wax paper and baking soda residue.
