Removing the Dishwasher Pump in a Whirlpool Du8950

The Whirlpool DU8950 is an energy-efficient, residential, undercounter dishwasher with multiple automatic washing cycles. The appliance uses a pump assembly to pump water in and out of the washing tub. If the dishwasher pump is clogged or one of the assembly components starts to fail, the water delivery and draining systems are noticeably less efficient. You can remove the pump assembly from your Whirlpool DU8950 dishwasher to clean, repair or replace it.

Instructions

    • 1

Switch off the circuit breaker that supplies the electricity to the dishwasher. Remove the upper and lower dishwasher racks.

    • 2

Locate the inner water feed tube that runs along the top and rear wall of the dishwasher. Remove the two screws that hold the inner water feed tube in place. Rotate the feed cap at the bottom of the tube a quarter turn to the left. Lift the inner water tube and lower spray arm assembly out of the dishwasher.

    • 3

Remove the two screws from the access panel below the dishwasher door. Pull the access and bottom toe panels straight down to clear the retaining clips on the dishwasher cabinet. Set aside the removed panels.

    • 4

Reach underneath the dishwasher to access the wiring, motor and drain hose components of the pump assembly. Pull the wiring connectors to detach the wires from the drive motor, pump motor, thermistor and soil sensor pressure switch.

    • 5

Squeeze the metal clamp that holds the drain hose to the pump assembly and slide it back. Remove the drain hose from the pump outlet on the assembly. Position a pan underneath the end of the hose to catch any water that spills out.

    • 6

Push back the plastic tab that holds the pump motor in place. Rotate the motor a quarter turn to the left to separate it from the pump assembly.

    • 7

Locate and remove the three tabs that hold the pump assembly in place underneath the dishwasher. Reach inside the dishwasher cabinet and lift out the entire pump assembly.
