How to Replace High Pressure Limit Switch on a Freezer

The high pressure limit switch in a freezer is a safety device that shuts off the compressor if the gas pressure through the tubes exceeds a certain level. This helps prevent a rupture in the compressor tubing. If the compressor motor repeatedly shuts off, the limit switch has likely failed and must be replaced. Buy a new limit switch for your particular freezer model from an appliance parts store, the manufacturer or an online retailer.

Instructions

    • 1

Shut off the freezer at the thermostat to stop the compressor, then unplug the appliance from the wall outlet.

    • 2

Remove the rear panel from the freezer using the nut driver to take out the bolts holding the panel to the back of the cabinet. Locate the high pressure limit switch, which is connected by two wires to the compressor. In a freezer, the switch is typically located in the upper left corner.

    • 3

Take out the two threaded terminals on the switch holding the two wires on the contacts. You may need to use a nut driver or screwdriver to remove this hardware, depending on your model. Pull off the two wires from the switch.

    • 4

Unscrew the mounting hardware holding the switch to the bracket inside the freezer. Remove the entire switch assembly. Take this part with you to a parts store for the correct matching part unless you are ordering the switch by mail using your freezer model number.

    • 5

Hold the new part in position on the bracket and secure it with the mounting hardware.

    • 6

Connect the wires to the switch contacts in the same way the wires were attached to the previous switch.

    • 7

Screw on the rear panel to the back of the cabinet.

    • 8

Plug in the power cord and switch on the freezer's thermostat control.
