How to Repair a GE Gas Stove

General Electric is one of the oldest, largest and most well-known appliance companies in the world. It sells a wide assortment of appliances, including gas stoves. While the ignition systems of gas stoves vary, they generally function in the same way regardless of make, with the gas being ignited by a spark to heat your food. If your GE gas stove malfunctions, troubleshoot it immediately to try to get it working again, and to ensure it's not posing a health hazard in its current condition.

Instructions

    • 1

Verify the stove is getting power. Gas stoves still rely on electricity to operate. Check your breakers to make sure everything is turned on so the stove has what it needs to ignite.

    • 2

Clean the burner if the burners aren't working. They frequently get clogged with grease or dirt, which impedes the gas flow. Use a soft brush or a damp rag to wipe down burners that aren't lit.

    • 3

Set your oven to manual and turn the oven setting to "Bake" then to "Broil" to see if the igniters work. They're usually located on the burners. If they don't change colors at all, they're likely burned out and need replacement. If they only turn red or orange, they're weaker than they should be and still need replacement.

    • 4

Lift the oven's hood to get a better view of the components underneath. Inspect the wires going to the igniters to see if any are loose. If the wiring is loose, it needs tightening into the igniter or outright replacement.

    • 5

Listen for erratic clicking as you turn the oven on. This indicates a faulty spark module that requires replacement. Check the manual for your specific model if this is the case because the process for changing the module varies.
