How to Seal an RV Air Conditioner

Step 1: Gather the necessary materials

- Foam pipe or backer rod: a flexible material that helps seal the gaps around the air conditioner.

- Butyl tape: a sticky, waterproof tape that helps seal the edges of the foam.

- Silicone sealant: a flexible, waterproof sealant that helps seal the seams and cracks.

- Caulk gun: a tool used to apply the sealant.

- Putty knife: a tool used to spread the sealant.

- Utility knife: a tool used to cut the foam.

- Isopropyl alcohol: a cleaning agent used to remove dirt and grease from the sealing area.

- Lint-free cloth: a cloth used to wipe the sealing area clean.

Step 2: Clean the sealing area

- Use the isopropyl alcohol and lint-free cloth to clean the area around the air conditioner where you will be applying the sealants.

- Ensure the surface is dry and free of dirt, grease, and any debris.

Step 3: Apply the foam pipe or backer rod

- Cut the foam pipe or backer rod to the size of the gaps around the air conditioner.

- Use a putty knife or your fingers to press it firmly into the gaps.

- Make sure the foam is completely filling the gaps to ensure a tight seal.

Step 4: Apply butyl tape

- Cut the butyl tape to the appropriate length and remove the backing.

- Press the butyl tape over the foam pipe or backer rod, ensuring it adheres well to the surface.

- Overlap the tape by at least 1/2 inch to create a continuous seal.

Step 5: Apply silicone sealant

- Cut the tip of the silicone sealant tube at an angle.

- Insert the tube into the caulk gun and apply the sealant along the edges of the butyl tape.

- Smooth the sealant with a putty knife to create a uniform, waterproof seal.

Step 6: Let the sealants dry

- Allow the sealants to dry completely according to the manufacturer's instructions before using the air conditioner.

By following these steps, you will have effectively sealed your RV air conditioner, preventing air leakage and moisture buildup, and ensuring optimal cooling performance.
