1. Preheat your electric smoker to 225 degrees Fahrenheit.
2. Form the ground beef into patties. I like to make my patties about 1/2-inch thick and 3 inches in diameter.
3. Season the patties with salt and pepper.
4. Place the patties on the smoker grate and cook for about 1 hour, or until the internal temperature reaches 160 degrees Fahrenheit.
5. While the patties are cooking, prepare the toppings. Shred the cheese, slice the lettuce and tomato, and chop the onion.
6. Once the patties are cooked, remove them from the smoker and let them rest for a few minutes.
7. Open the hamburger buns and add the patties.
8. Top the patties with your favorite toppings.
9. Serve immediately.
* If you want to add more flavor to your hamburgers, you can marinate them in a mixture of olive oil, Worcestershire sauce, and garlic powder for at least 30 minutes before cooking.
* You can also cook your hamburgers over direct heat if you prefer. Just preheat your smoker to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and cook the patties for about 5 minutes per side, or until they reach your desired doneness.
* If you don't have an electric smoker, you can also make hamburgers in a charcoal smoker. Just follow the same instructions, but use charcoal instead of wood chips.
