Check the Homelite chainsaw to make sure the gas tank is fueled up. If the fuel is older than three or four months, dump it out and add fresh fuel. Homelite suggests that 2.7 ounces of its own brand two-cycle oil should be mixed in with every gallon of gasoline.
Change out the saw's chain blade if it skips, jumps or does not seem to cut very well. Do this by using a 5/8 inch wrench to remove the two bar nuts. Pull off the clutch cover and the guide plate. Lift the bar off the saw and remove the old chain blade from the bar. Install the new blade, place the bar back on followed by the guide plate and the clutch cover and then tighten the bolts down with the wrench.
Check the air filter to see if it is dirty. Do this by first removing the three screws holding down the cylinder cover. Also remove the screw holding down the air filter. Use a rag to remove sawdust and oil. Pull the filter out, tap it out gently and then wash it in warm water. Be sure to dry it out well before putting it back into the chainsaw.
Check the fuel lines running to the carburetor for cracks or breaks. If any of the lines are damaged, remove them with a pair of needle-nose pliers and then install fresh ones by sliding them on with the pliers. Also check the fuel filter and replace it if it is fouled.
Remove the spark plug with a spark plug wrench. Screw a new plug in by hand and then tighten it with the spark plug wrench.
