How to Recycle Railroad Ties

The vast majority of railroad ties are made of wood. Every year the railroads throw away a great deal of these ties. As the wood is treated with preservatives, it is not advisable to burn these ties as they can pollute the air. They are becoming popular, however, as a landscaping tool. With a little time and hard work, they can be a decorative addition to any yard.

Instructions

    • 1

Gather discarded railroad ties from a lumber yard or directly from the railroad company.

    • 2

Cut the ties to the desired length using a table saw.

    • 3

Place the ties to create a border for objects in your yard such as flower beds and walkways. As the wood is treated with preservatives, your new borders will not rot.
