Care of Cast Iron Urns

Cast iron urns decorate yards and gardens. Vintage Victorian era urns often have layers of chipping old paint and rust on them. Metal pieces, such as cast iron urns, require a bit of care as they are affected by the elements and tend to rust, which causes their paint to flake off. Instead of sandblasting the paint and rust off, or stripping it with chemicals, you can sand down the rusted area and give the urn a brand new coat of paint.

Instructions

    • 1

Scrub the rust and the loose paint off your cast iron urn with a wire brush. Sand down the paint or rusted area with sandpaper to level out the urn's surface.

    • 2

Spray the surface of the urn with an even layer of outdoor primer. Spray the paint on in small vertical sections and overlap the painted area to ensure that you cover the entire urn. Wait for the paint to dry overnight. Spray an even layer of exterior paint over the urn's surface in the same manner.

Apply paste wax onto the urn's surface to stop it from rusting. Pick up a small dab of wax, the size of a quarter, on a cheese cloth. Wipe the urn with the wax in a circular motion while pressing down on the urn to ensure that the wax gets on the entire surface of the urn. Reapply wax onto the cloth as needed. Wait five minutes for the wax to harden. Buff the wax coating with a soft, dry cloth to make it shine.
