How to Refinish a Cast Iron Gas Heater

Cast-iron gas heaters are designed to mimic traditional cast-iron wood heaters. They are attractive and give an authentic feel to a room, but they burn cleaner and require less maintenance. Over time, even these cast-iron heaters can need refinishing. You can do this yourself using the appropriate high-temperature paint. These are available in many colors to suit your decor. You can even finish with a shiny topcoat to give the cast iron gas heater a porcelain-style finish.

Instructions

    • 1

Wash the heater using a nylon scrub brush and a cleaner that degreases, such as trisodium phosphate or dish soap. Work the scrub brush into any detailing and tight spots. Rinse with a sponge and dry thoroughly.

    • 2

Protect the surfaces you don't want painted, such as handles or glass doors, using cardboard or plastic and painter's tape.

    • 3

Open the can of high-temperature stove paint and stir with a wooden stir stick until the paint is smooth.

    • 4

Load a paint spray gun with the paint according to unit's instructions. You can rent a paint gun from a home supply store.

    • 5

Apply the paint to gas heater using even strokes. Allow it to dry for one hour.

    • 6

Apply a second coat and let it cure for 12 hours.

    • 7

Remove the painter's tape and coverings.
