Can Grass Grow in Potting Soil?

Potting soil is soil that has been sterilized to prevent the occurrence of weeds, pests, bacteria and other problems. Virtually anything that will grow in garden or yard soil will grow in potting soil as well.
  1. Nutrients

    • In addition to the fact that the grass will not need to compete with weeds or other pests, potting soil contains beneficial nutrients that are necessary to the grass. Depending on the particular type of potting soil used, this may include organic mulch, compost or chemical fertilizers.

    Composition

    • Potting soil is typically made up of several things. Surprisingly, soil may or may not be one of the ingredients, depending on the particular type of potting soil. It may include such components as perlite, pine bark and peat moss.

    Benefits

    • Potting soil is much lighter and less compacted than the soil grass is usually grown in. This benefits the grass because drainage is better and its roots are able to spread out and seek nutrients without having to struggle against hard, unyielding dirt.
