How to Replace a Deck Drive Belt on a White Lawnmower

The deck drive belt on a White riding lawnmower or lawn tractor can take a lot of damage. However, eventually these belts will wear out to the point they will snap; and when they do, the mower will no longer operate correctly. Without the deck drive belt, the mower won't cut any grass as the PTO (power take off) will not engage and the blades won't turn. When you're performing other service and cleaning on your White lawnmower, check the condition of the deck drive belt.

Instructions

    • 1

Park your White lawnmower on a level surface. Engage the parking brake lever. Move the clutch lever into the "Neutral" position. Turn off the ignition and take out the key. Unhook the wires that lead to the spark plugs.

    • 2

Disengage the PTO lever by pulling the handle backward. Lower the deck into the cutting position. Unscrew the deck arm retaining bolts, located on the left-hand arm of the mower deck, until they're finger-tight. Turn the belt adjusting bolt clockwise to loosen the deck drive belt.

    • 3

Slide the belt guard off of the gearbox mount. Take the pin out of the left-hand cross-bar arm to disconnect the arm. Hold the cross-bar down, while taking the pin out, to prevent the arm from flying upward after the pin has been removed.

Draw a diagram of the old belt's routing, if the belt was still attached, to help you with the re-routing process. Pry the drive belt off all of the pulleys and take it out of the mower. Work the new belt around the pulleys in the same routing as the old one. Make sure the belt is on the pulleys completely.

Install the pin into the left-hand cross-bar arm to reconnect the arm. Put the belt guard back onto the gearbox mount. Turn the belt adjusting bolt counterclockwise to tighten the belt. Hold the deck arms in place, keeping them straight, while tightening the deck arm retaining bolts.
