How to Troubleshoot a Troy-Bilt Horse Tiller

Troy-Bilt manufactures a variety of different outdoor power equipment like mowers, trimmers, edgers, chainsaws and tillers. You push a tiller similar to a lawn mower, but a tiller breaks new ground and prepares the soil for planting. The Troy-Bilt Horse tiller is an automatic rear tine roto tiller that lets you guide the machine along as the wheels pull it forward. If minor glitches occur with the performance of the tiller, try some basic troubleshooting tips before you take it in for service.

Instructions

    • 1

Tighten any loose wires, move the throttle lever to the "Start" position and move the "Wheels-Tines-PTO Drive" lever to neutral if the tiller refuses to start. Change the choke setting and try starting the tiller at different settings, if starting is an issue.

    • 2

Wait until after you shift the "Wheels-Tines-PTO Drive" lever to forward before squeezing the forward interlock levers, if the tiller shuts off when the lever is shifted to forward.

    • 3

Use a slower wheel speed, check the spark plug for corrosion and replace if necessary; clean out the air cleaner and filter or tighten loose throttle cables if the tiller lacks power.

    • 4

Move the "Wheels-Tines-PTO Drive" lever to the neutral position or fill the fuel tank if the tiller is difficult to start. Clean out the gas tank if the gas is old, as bad gas will cause starting problems.

    • 5

Adjust tire pressure so tires are even, if the tiller pulls to one side when using it.

    • 6

Move the throttle to "Fast" and change to a low belt range or slow wheel speed, if the tiller jumps forward as you're tilling. Also, try a shallower setting for the depth regulator lever.
